When did your love of STEM begin?

My love for STEM began in high school. I've always had an interest in math and sciences but that interest grew when I understood how these theoretical principles could be applied to problem solve. My interest in protecting the environment (the air we breathe, the water we drink and the need for sustainable cities) fueled my desire to understand the basic principles of science and the use of technologies to better the world.

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

The best part about working in the field of STEM is the ability to problem solve and design systems that can assist with the project at hand. In addition to the technical component, I truly enjoy the people management aspect and ability to work hand in hand with team members who have different ideas and solutions. The field of STEM has evolved over the years to be more diverse (in terms of race and gender) and it gives me great pleasure to know that the typical stereotypes for people in a STEM role is changing.

What advice would you give to young women considering a career in STEM?

Do not let anyone tell you that you are not capable of becoming who you want to be. Surround yourself with people that care about you and your well being. Stay motivated, curious and ask questions. Explore the various fields of STEM and know that only you can control the path to your own destiny!

“This is when I participated in a Public Speaking Contest at school and won first place! My public speaking

skills have only grown since then and I utilize these skills in the professional world on a daily basis.”
