What is the bravest thing that you have done?

I may have to list four things chronologically here I believe I have done the most bravest - I majored in Mechanical engineering infamously touted as exclusively men’s field. I was the only girl in a class of 80 boys. Next, I decided to pursue PhD after a two year career break and when my daughter was barely 4 months old. Third, when my husband and I chased our dreams to come to Canada and start from scratch. Last and most recent, I put my career on hold again to embrace motherhood with greater difficulties for the 2nd time through IVF.

What do you love most about STEM?

You can do everything and anything. Sounds ambiguous, I know. But it is so true. You can do research, you can create, you can design, you can innovate, you can write, you can do calculations, you can test, you can drive, you can innovate, you can calibrate, you can help, you can serve, you can teach. There is nothing you can not do. This is what I tell my daughter everyday and I want girls all around the world to know.

Who influenced you to pursue an education and/or career in STEM?

My cousin - son of my father’s sister. He was the first engineer from our family. He is now a COO of one of the biggest insurance organizations in India. He was and is still an inspiration to me.

“Growing up I was always trying to get medals or awards.

This is the first table tennis championship medal I received 25 years ago!”
