Rachel is currently studying Biomedical Engineering at the University of Guelph and is passionate about improving lives through medical technology innovation. She enjoys being involved on campus, she has been a member of the Guelph Engineering Society and is currently on the planning committee for an upcoming engineering student conference. She also loves to dance, hike, craft and take group spin classes.
In her spare time, Rachel enjoys taking fitness and dance classes, doing crafts, going for walks or hikes and listening to podcasts.
Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering 2026, University of Guelph
What is the bravest thing that you have done?
The bravest thing I have ever done is move across the country for a co-op position with minimal technical experience in the industry. I was thrilled for the opportunity to work as an R&D automated cell separation co-op student at STEMCELL Technologies in Vancouver, B.C. However, I had never worked in a biological lab before, so it was a big learning curve, especially while navigating living in a new province! Everyone was so supportive and provided valuable guidance throughout my entire work term. I learned so many technical skills, and so much about myself, so I am proud I was brave enough to take on the unique experience. In fact, my next co-op position will take me on another out-of-province experience in Montreal. I look forward to the challenges to come!
What is your earliest memory of being intrigued by STEM?
My earliest memory of being intrigued by STEM is attending a STEM Summer camp at the University of Guelph called ‘Creative Encounters with Science’, where there were STEM-inspired games, experiments, and building challenges. This was such a fun, hands-on experience which left a lasting impact.
What made you decide to pursue a career in STEM?
I chose to pursue a career in STEM, specifically Biomedical Engineering, because of my passion for helping others and my desire to work in healthcare. At the same time, I’ve always excelled in math and physics, making Biomedical Engineering the perfect combination of my interests and strengths.
