Meet Chinmayi Balusu

Chinmayi neuroscience event I organized in person at my university before COVID -- event organizing is one of my favorite methods of STEM outreach.

Chinmayi Balusu graduated with Bachelor of Arts a degree in Medical Humanities from Columbia University. She currently works as the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Simply Neuroscience. In her spare time, Chinmayi enjoys exploring nature trails, watching Telugu movies, practicing taekwondo, writing poetry, playing soccer, and gardening.

When did your love of STEM begin?

I stumbled across neuroscience during middle school as a tangent from anatomy. It was fascinating to explore the biological complexity of the brain, and as I delved deeper into the field, I realized that neuroscience consisted of far more beyond the biological and medical perspectives as well. That was what inspired my curiosity in understanding neurosciences' interdisciplinary connections, within and outside of STEM.

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

As a brain injury researcher, youth science communicator, peer-to-peer educator, social entrepreneur, and student, every day is different! It's wonderful to have the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse community of fellow scholars, innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders in neuroscience from around the world in working toward shared goals. STEM overall is a continuous learning journey that has highs and lows along the way, but it's great to know that you are working toward meaningful impact step-by-step.

What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?

Never lose sight of your ambition! Similar to STEM advancements, personal progress can sometimes feel static, but dynamic changes and breakthroughs are always on the horizon -- so apply this parallel to your professional development journey as well. Be sure to find mentors early, whether through older classmates, teachers, professors, or alumni. These individuals can help support you through various challenges along the way.
