When did your love of STEM begin?

In high school I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, but I did know that I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life behind a desk. I decided that the apprenticeship pathway was a great opportunity to explore my passion for working with my hands. Within my first few weeks on a jobsite, I knew I had made the right decision. I instantly fell in love with the skilled trades.

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

I love how fast paced the industry is. I find everything is constantly evolving, whether it be more sustainable building materials, or a more efficient building process, there’s always a better way of getting the job done. I personally love the challenge of having to adapt to an ever-changing industry.

What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?

Don’t hesitate, just do it. Traditionally, young women aren’t encouraged into careers in STEM or the Skilled Trades, that, combined with the lack of representation in the industry can be very discouraging for young women. I know I second guessed my decision a lot, I kept questioning whether I’d be strong enough or tough enough. I quickly learned that if you’re truly passionate about your career, you learn to adapt and persevere, eventually overcoming all obstacles.
