When did your love of STEM begin?

From an early age, I remember being fascinated by the human body, particularly how the brain works and the purpose of blood. I was also curious about both animals and plants. One of my earliest science lessons involved planting a red kidney bean to learn about the plant lifecycle. Observing its growth fueled my interest in nature and science even more. Various experiences continued to reinforce my interest in STEM over the years, and I frequently asked my parents and relatives questions about how household items worked.

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

For me, the best part about working in STEM is its incredible versatility. I have found that STEM often extends beyond practicing the science that I have learned in a lab or classroom. Blending science with business and community activism throughout my career, I have been able to navigate direct patient care, business ownership and system-level thinking all at once.

Drawing on my background in health management and leadership, I wear many hats on any given day. Whether I am providing direct patient care such as minor ailment assessments and chronic disease management or leading my dynamic team through the logistics of health systems while operating in a fast-paced retail environment, my focus remains on delivering accessible healthcare to meet the needs of our community.

What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?

For those interested in pursuing a career in STEM, I would recommend the following based on 15+ years in the pharmacy profession:

Commit to Lifelong Learning: The world of STEM is constantly changing so investing in yourself and leveraging formal and informal experiences will help you to adapt. It also helps to explore opportunities (e.g. hobbies, employment, volunteer work) outside your chosen field as the transferable knowledge and skills can be highly beneficial. Build a network of individuals whose skillsets balance your strengths and opportunities for growth. I have experienced the immense value of mentorship, both as a mentor and mentee. We will not know everything and cannot succeed alone.

Find the Intersection of Passion and Purpose: STEM careers cover a broad umbrella. Feel free to explore non-traditional paths. I found great satisfaction in combining my passion for healthcare with my interest in business. If you have the opportunity, explore different environments i.e. rural, urban, corporate, or entrepreneurial until you find the space where your passion and skills intersect.

Embrace Challenges as Growth Opportunities: Throughout my career, I have learned that being adaptable is fundamental to success. When faced with adversity, pause for a moment and then use that challenge as a stepping stone for growth. Lean on your support network when appropriate. Also, remember to show yourself compassion as we are constantly evolving.

Tell us a fun fact about you and your current role!

People might be surprised to learn how much I love baking. Some of my favourite childhood memories involve making cakes with my family during the holidays. Even though I don’t bake frequently now, I find the process calming. It is rewarding for me to start from scratch, measuring each ingredient carefully, paying close attention to each step in the recipe and successfully creating something delicious that can be shared. I look forward to making more time for baking and perhaps, cake decorating.
