Meet My-Linh Yee

My-Linh at a construction site in Woodstock for a project I worked on for the MTO where I assisted in the design of temporary infrastructure during construction.

My-Linh Yee graduated with Bachelor of Engineering science, a degree in Civil Engineering from Western University and and Bachelor of Arts, Honors Business Administration, Ivey Business School. In her spare time, My-Linh likes to ski, snowboard, and is an avid baseball fan she enjoys the analytical approach to baseball decisions.

When did your love of STEM begin?

I was first exposed to engineering in fourth grade when I joined a FIRST Lego League (FLL) robotics team. Through this program, I got the opportunity to build and program robots in addition to researching issues within my community and determining innovative solutions to these problems. The encouragement and support of my teacher/coach and team mentors helped foster my interest in STEM, and showed me how I could be successful. My positive experiences within the FLL program are the main reason I chose to pursue engineering and what I credit for developing my love of STEM.

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

My favourite part of engineering is the continual challenge of applying my knowledge to new projects. Throughout my co-ops, I’ve gotten the opportunity to apply knowledge from my classes to various projects, and while the theory may be the same, the way it gets used for each project is different. The different project requirements and focuses continually challenges me to utilize my problem-solving skills to determine how to best apply my technical knowledge. I love this challenge and it is a bonus that each day is different!

What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?

You CAN do it. You don’t need to have tons of experience or significant knowledge of STEM to pursue it in University and ultimately your career. While there may be people with more experience or knowledge, having the dedication to learning about and passion for STEM is also very important. Don’t feel discouraged if you feel like you don’t have enough knowledge or experience to pursue a career in STEM, because there are so many opportunities for you to improve throughout your career.
