Meet Nishana Ramsawak

Nishana Ramsawak, demonstrating how to build a water treatment column with some of the attendees at the Engineering Outreach Summer workshops held at the Beaty Water Research Center in the Queen's University.

Nishiana graduated with a PhD in Civil Engineering at Queens University. In her free time she enjoys coffee, crafts, baking, cooking, and reading.

A fun fact about Nishana's current role is the opportunity to interact with some of the most brilliant minds, including her supervisors, Head of Department, colleagues, professors, and experts in their fields. Simultaneously, she finds joy in inspiring the next generation of engineers, scientists, politicians, and future leaders—an exhilarating yet humbling experience that fuels her passion for STEM even further.

When did your love of STEM begin?

I have always been fascinated by the world of Science for as long as I can remember. But, my true passion for all aspects of STEM began in high school when my science teacher, who was my role model encouraged me to join the field, because "they needed more people like me". She had a huge impact in my life and I wanted to leave an impact on others the way she did with me. I try to do this with my outreach contributions to STEM for Black, Indigineous, People of Color in Kingston and environs, by my scholarships and commitment to improving education in children in my home country Trinidad and Tobago, and now, in academia!

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

Getting to experience those "Eureka" moments in kids, seeing their love for STEM develop and grow over time, having them see and appreciate that STEM is all about life. Regardless of gender, socioeconomic background, or color, we are making a difference one child at a time.

What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?

This male dominated sector can be intimidating, but, Women, it is important to remember that we can do anything a man can do, and even better in some instances. Many brave and strong women before us have laid the foundation for us to take the mantle further, join us in our efforts to make STEM more inclusive for all. We are waiting for you!!!
